Android to generate a billion dollars in ad sales in 2012

We all know that one of the big drivers behind the development of Android was to get more ad money for Google. Apparently, that is working out well for the search giant. Forbes reports that Android could become a billion dollar ad platform in 2012.

The news comes by way of analyst Gene Munster. Munster claims that Android generated $5.90 per use in mobile advertising in 2010 and that in 2012 that per use amount will work out to $9.85. Munster also figures that the Android Market could earn more per user from in-app ads over the next couple years.
Munster predicts in 2012 that there will be 133 million Android users and at $9.85 per user, Google will rake in $1.3 billion in Android advertising revenue. I could see these numbers happening and if one really popular device hits the market, like a more reasonably priced Xoom tablet, the numbers may be even better.

Smarthphone comparison

A Comparison Between Two Smartphones

Since Nokia made a huge fuss of its long-awaited flagship the N8 smartphone which is intended to be its answer and competition against Apple’s iPhone late last year, it is worthwhile to compare the two smartphones based on design, functionality and price.

So what is a smartphone?

For those who haven’t joined the bandwagon and scratching their heads on what the brouhaha is over smartphones, these high-end devices where you spend probably more time on its additional functions rather than just call or text – basically function as a phone should, have advanced features that you might find in a personal digital assistant, a computer or a video-camera such as the ability to send and receive emails and edit office documents, being able to edit photos, browse internet, etc, as well as have the ability to take still photos and record HD videos. All these innovative functions are covered in one super gadget. The iPhone introduced more than two years ago lead the pack among the variety of smartphones primarily because of its functionality, design and it helps that Steve Jobs continually updates the features and that Apple has an awesome marketing strategy.

If you are looking to sell cell phones then your best bet is to try price comparison sites such as Sell Cell who offer the chance for you to get rid of your old cell phones by taking part in cell phone recycle schemes.

Design:

Both cell phones – the N8 and iPhone are masterpieces of technology and innovation in their own right and it’s difficult to judge which is better on the basis of size comparison, height-width comparison and screen comparison.

The iPhone is slimmer than the N8; it’s probably the world’s slimmest phone. While both phones have similarities in dimension and weight – the key difference is in the thickness. Nokia phone has a 0.51 inches (12.9mm) which excludes the camera area whereas iPhone is only 0.37 inches (9.3mm). The iPhone employs stainless steel and ultra durable glass against the aluminium used by Nokia.

Both phones come with a 3.5” screen size and whereas the N8 has a resolution: 16:9 nHD (640 x 360 pixels) AMOLED, the iPhone has a Retina Display (LCD with IPS technology) making it 640×960 pixels of resolution. In the area of overall design, the iPhone win hands-down with its sleek look.

Price Difference:

So how much are you willing to spend to buy your new cell phone? Consider that smartphones due to their advanced functionalities do not come cheap. Your wallet is a key factor in selecting the phone you want. Research shows that the Nokia cell phone is at least 20-25% cheaper in price than iPhone 4 (unlocked version). Apple products are usually expensive than its competitors but still their products stay in great demand.

Color Variants:

The N8 has a variety of colors to chose from – the silver white, dark grey, orange, blue and green and so there is a variety to chose from. The iPhone on the other hand only comes in two colors – white and black, presumably to show off its sleek and functional design but it doesn’t give you a lot to chose from.

Camera Quality:

These days a cellphone is weighed on their ability to take photos and record high quality videos – they’ve now overtaken the digicam market with this functionality. With a 5MP camera and 720 HD video recording of 30 frames/second, the iPhone can take gorgeous, quality pictures and footage. In this regard, the makers of Nokia have pulled out all the stops and the N8 has a 12 MP camera and is able to capture stunning photos and can record 720p HD video. So N8 gets a plus against iPhone4 in photos and video because of having a 12 mega pixel camera.

Software

The N8 mobile works on its Symbian^ 3 operating system – a system that it was in the process of tweaking last year but it packs a punch. It has a visual task switcher and manager, multiple home screens and simplified settings control. It also throws in an image editor and video editing software to take advantage of those shots and videos captured with its 12 MP camera.

Apple’s iOS4 operating system also allows for multitasking on a multi-touch screen. This makes it easy to switch between several applications. It comes with cool applications such as FaceTime to make video calls with its two-way camera, engaging video games and high-definition video editing tools etc. Plus there are above 300,000 applications and games available to download from App Store! It’s like being a kid in an enormous candy factory.

Going by the superpowers packed into both the N8 and the iPhone, it might be a tad bit difficult choosing between the two.

A Gadget In The League Of Its Own

Among all the Apple devices iPad is one that has changed many notions and conceptions. And, apart from every thing else it has definitely worked to blur the huge gap that existed between smart phones and laptops. It gets more evident from the fact that, first ever tablet computer that iPad is, finds a place among the Time Magazine's list of 50 Best Innovations of the year 2010. Its popularity can be gauged from the fact that it one of the highest selling gadgets in the recent times. The iPad deals offered by the network companies have also contributed to a good extent.

This 680 grams gadget presents to the audience an incorporation of all the things that can definitely be termed as awesome in their individual spheres. In that sense it has all that a typical smart phone offers, and more than that, the kind which was not explored in the manner Apple has done it. Those who are well versed with the iPhone applications can look forward to have all of those applications and many other that has been developed for iPad only. It is the USP of the product!

However, its success can definitely be attributed to the various other factors like the availability of so-called cheap iPad,obviously due to the fabulous iPad deals offered by the network suppliers. The companies like O2, Orange, three, T-Mobile, Vodafone, have offered the contract deals, pay as you go deals and Sim free deals. The lucrative free gifts offered by the companies have seen many going for iPad contract that has served the purpose well. However, the basic premise over which all these are based is the specialized features offered by the gadget. More and more gadget freaks are taking it as a platform for the various kinds of audio-visual media that include periodicals, books, games, web content, music, movies and many other things.

LG Optimus Pad confirmed for MWC 2011 with Honeycomb

LG spilled the beans on the T-Mobile G-Slate earlier this month, and now its European counterpart is getting ready to make its own debut. A Korean press release has confirmed that LG intends to properly launch the LG Optimus Pad at MWC 2011 in a little over a week’s time.

It’s been a long journey, too, from the first talk of the Optimus Pad back in mid-2010. The slate is expected to be a European 3G version of the G-Tablet, with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor and an 8.9-inch capacitive touchscreen display along with a 6,400 mAh battery; as you can see from LG’s press shot, it runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

Rumor Hint Sony PSP 2/NGP

Rumors Hint Sony PSP 2/NGP Will Cost $299 to $349 When Launched

Sony psp 2 ngp 300x165 Rumors Hint Sony PSP 2/NGP Will Cost $299 to $349 When LaunchedConsulting firm EEDAR has "predicted" that the next generation Sony PSP 2 AKA NGP, will come in two different versions. One will be WiFi only and the other will be WiFI + 3G. Prices have also been provided which hint that the WiFi only model will carry a price tag of $299 while the 3G model will be $349.

Although we suggest WiFi + 3G here, it could be a different model which perhaps has more storage space for example although we are guessing the more expensive will be a 3G model.

Although the $349 price tag was given for the upper end model, they also report that in the US this could creep up to $399.

As well as predicting prices, the company also expects that sales of the PSP 2 will exceed the sales of the former PSP model.

The team also suggest that not all regions will get a 3G model of the PSP 2 and that it could depend on sales of other 3G devices in the area, such as in the US the iPad 3G accounts for just 30%. As far as how all these numbers were put together, they seem to be based around speculation rather than fact, so a lot could change by the end of the year when the PSP 2 is set for launch.

smartphone share

Android, BlackBerry and iOS are tied in US smartphone share

Nielsen Smartphone OS

Which smartphone operating system truly leads the US market. According to Nielsen, none of them. Says Don Kellogg, Nielsen's Telecom Practice Research and Insights senior manager, it's a "three-way tie" between Apple's iOS, Google Android and Research in Motion's BlackBerry OS. Oh, man, it is going to be a bad day for fanboy jockeying for position.

Nielsen strips back any potential contention about unit shipments and focuses on install base. By that measure, among US smartphone owners, 28 percent have devices with iOS and 27 percent each for Android and BlackBerry OS (data is from December 2010). But as the chart above shows, the long-term trend is revealing. Since February 2010, iOS has remained largely flat, with sine-wave like fluctuations between 26 percent and 29 percent install base share, that despite the June 2010 launch of iPhone 4. During the same time period, Android's install base steadily rose from 8 percent share. Meanwhile, BlackBerry OS has steadily declined -- from 39 percent share measured by install base.

The longer-term trend syncs with another Nielsen observed last month -- in December, 43 percent of recent smartphone purchasers bought an Android phone compared to 26 percent for iPhone. For some perspective on why Android is gaining now, please refer to my October 2009 post: "Apple cannot win the smartphone wars." However, BlackBerry nosed down after iPhone 4 launched, with percentage among new purchasers dropping from 35 percent in June 2010 to 20 percent in December.

Nielen also did some, ah, ethnic profiling of smartphone buyers. Thirty-one percent of all Americans owned a smartphone in December 2010. Asian Pacific/Islanders and Hispanics were most likely to own smartphones (45 percent for each). African-Americans: 33 percent. Whites were least likely to own smartphones: 27 percent. Among new purchasers, Asian Pacific/Islanders were the most likely to buy a smartphone (60 percent), followed by Hispanics (56 percent), African Americans (44 percent) and Whites (42 percent).

By measure of install base, iPhone leads among Asian Pacific/Islanders (36 percent). Hispanics: iPhone (29 percent) African Americans: BlackBerry (31 percent). Whites: iPhone (29 percent). But among Hispanics and Whites, BlackBerry closely follows (27 percent).

Nielsen Smartphone OS

The demographic data is by far the most interesting and useful, particularly for cellular carriers planning their marketing programs. But Nielsen doesn't provide other demographic measures. Which ethnic group is more likely to have data or choose 4G over 3G?

But news of the day will be the three-way tie. Android is sure to nudge ahead of iPhone when Nielsen updates the data, thanks to the surge among new smartphone purchasers. But iPhone is coming to Verizon on February 10. This horse race isn't over yet.

Gadget maniak | android support SVG

Android Honeycomb's Browser Supports SVG

One of the most annoying things about Android's built-in browser was the lack of support for SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). Android's browser was the most popular mobile browser that didn't support SVG and that was surprising, considering Google's push for better web apps.

Ariya Hidayat tried to see if Honeycomb's browser can handle SVG files and the good news is that the answer is affirmative. Hopefully, the next Android release for smartphones will include this feature.

Nook Color Android 3.0 Download Now Available

Nook color android 3 0 300x196 Nook Color Android 3.0 Download Now Available

We mentioned yesterday that Android 3.0 was ported over to a rooted Nook Color. We hear today that the Android 3.0 download is now available.

The Honeycomb port needs to run from an SD card and the developer who managed to port it over has managed to get several functions working on the device.

Features already working in the port include:

* Graphics acceleration
* Accelerometer
* Wireless
* Touchscreen
* Buttons
* Sleep/Wake

For those who have a rooted Nook Color, you can grab it now. Remember that this is an early version and that a few bugs will show up. However, the developers who create these ports tend to be quick at getting problems solved, so expect within a month or so that a final and stable version will be made available.

If you do decide to test it for yourself, just remember that rooting any device carries certain risks, so do it with caution. Also, let us know how you get on in the comments below.
