Any Internet service provider (ISP) will have its own technical support experts, but it is often wise to know some basic troubleshooting steps so you can address simple problems on your own rather than spending time on the phone with a technical support rep. If you use the Siemens Speedstream 4200 DSL modem, follow some simple steps to troubleshoot problems you may come across.Instructions
Things You'll Need:
1.Reset the modem by unplugging its power cord, waiting a full 30 seconds and plugging it back in. This is a useful troubleshooting step if the modem will not go online or the connection drops intermittently. Allow the modem to run through its entire boot cycle and test the connectivity again.
2.Unplug the Ethernet cable that attaches the Speedstream to any router or other home networking device you may use and plug it directly into the computer's Ethernet port. This is known as "bypassing" the router, and is also a useful way of troubleshooting no connectivity, slow speeds or intermittent connectivity. After bypassing, reset the modem as in Step 1 and test your connection again.
3.Reconfigure the modem by opening an Internet browser with an Ethernet cable still attached from the modem to the computer, typing "10.0.0.1" into the address bar and pressing the "Enter" key. You can find information on configuration settings in the Speedstream 4200's manual (see Resources), but you will likely need to contact your ISP's technical support department to gather connection information specific to your Internet service. If your modem is incorrectly configured for your Internet service it will never go online, so reconfiguring the modem can resolve a lack of connectivity.

Verizon Will Refund $90 Million to Overcharged Data Users
Verizon Wireless, writing to us this evening, has officially confirmed it will credit 15 million customers with $90 million in compensation for "mistaken past data charges."
Most customers should expect a credit in the $2 to $4 range, although some royally screwed customers will apparently "receive larger credits or refunds," the statement read. The credits will begin to flow sometime later this month and into November.
Additional explanation provided by Verizon, from their email:
As we reviewed customer accounts, we discovered that over the past several years approximately 15 million customers who did not have data plans were billed for data sessions on their phones that they did not initiate. These customers would normally have been billed at the standard rate of $1.99 per megabyte for any data they chose to access from their phones. The majority of the data sessions involved minor data exchanges caused by software built into their phones; others involved accessing the web, which should not have incurred charges. We have addressed these issues to avoid unintended data charges in the future.
Who among you Verizon-wielding readers was on the receiving end of a data overcharge? Anyone?

'Vodafone Czech Republic to use MobilKom's CDMA network'
Vodafone Czech Republic enhances its mobile internet offer through an agreement with MobilKom on using its CDMA network, which covers 75 percent of the population. MobilKom operates in the Czech market since 2007 under the brand Ufon. Vodafone also offers a discounted combo modem for notebook connections, which automatically connects to 3G in the areas with 3G coverage and in the other areas searches for the CDMA network. Vodafone offers the Mobile Connect combo modem supporting EDGE, CDMA and 3G for CZK 77 with a 12-month commitment or for CZK 977 with a six-month commitment. Vodafone will thus offer data at 300 kbps to 2 Mbps to 80 percent of population. Monthly fees for internet access are not higher. Customers can choose from the Permanent Connection for CZK 525 with 3GB FUP or Tailored for CZK 472.50. At the same time Vodafone progresses with its 3G network construction and plans to cover 60 cities by the end of the year. Currently it covers more than 30 percent of the population with 3G and 95 percent of the population with EDGE.
