How to Troubleshoot a Siemens Speedstream 4200 Modem
Things You'll Need:
1.Reset the modem by unplugging its power cord, waiting a full 30 seconds and plugging it back in. This is a useful troubleshooting step if the modem will not go online or the connection drops intermittently. Allow the modem to run through its entire boot cycle and test the connectivity again.
2.Unplug the Ethernet cable that attaches the Speedstream to any router or other home networking device you may use and plug it directly into the computer's Ethernet port. This is known as "bypassing" the router, and is also a useful way of troubleshooting no connectivity, slow speeds or intermittent connectivity. After bypassing, reset the modem as in Step 1 and test your connection again.
3.Reconfigure the modem by opening an Internet browser with an Ethernet cable still attached from the modem to the computer, typing "10.0.0.1" into the address bar and pressing the "Enter" key. You can find information on configuration settings in the Speedstream 4200's manual (see Resources), but you will likely need to contact your ISP's technical support department to gather connection information specific to your Internet service. If your modem is incorrectly configured for your Internet service it will never go online, so reconfiguring the modem can resolve a lack of connectivity.

Mobile devices push portable wireless modem sector
ABI Research principal analyst Jeff Orr said that with the number of mobile broadband subscribers expected to exceed 150 crore by 2015 and with consumers buying more Internet-enabled wireless devices such as Ipads, netbooks and smart phones, "cellular modems used to connect Internet services to mobile devices are, therefore, gaining in popularity."
While most support GSM, GPRS, EDGE or HSDPA network technologies, a growing number use 4G technologies. They also support various frequency bands and access technology and come is all sorts of form factors such as PC cards, USB dongles, internal Mini-Cards and mobile hotspot routers.
One such device is Huawei's E583C portable hotspot, which provide 7.2Mb/s downloads and 5.76Mb/s uploads. Weighing just 90g, it can provide an Internet connection to up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices at a time. Some products provide 21.1Mb/s downloads using HSPA+ connections.
Some of the new wireless modems that debuted this year are Sierra Wireless' Aircard 250U and Franklin Wireless' U600. They both support 4G connections using mobile WiMAX. WiMAX modems for PCs are also available from Green Packet, Intel and Motorola. On the LTE front, vendors are preparing to sell new products, such as Huawei's E398 USB modem, which supports LTE, UMTS and GSM.

Franklin launches U600 3G and 4G USB mobile broadband modem through Sprint
Franklin Wireless's new U600 modem includes many features including a 270-degree rotating hinge, four external antenna ports, firmware update management object and global positioning system location based services while on 3G and 4G antenna TX diversity which optimizes uploads while on WiMAX.
The U600 3G and 4G USB modem supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP and Mac OS 10.5, 10.6 with Intel. In addition, it has separate light-emitting diode displays that make it easy for users to know whether they are connected to Sprint's 3G or 4G network, the company said.
OC Kim, president of Franklin Wireless, said: "We are delighted to announce our continued partnership with Sprint and look forward to providing its customers with our newest 3G and 4G USB mobile broadband modem. Modem used in an alarm system
This alarm system senses motion and then alerts you by phone. [Oscar] had an old external modem sitting around and, with some wise hardware choices, he came up with a simple circuit to use it. First up is the PIC 16F628A chosen because it doesn’t require an external crystal. This connects with the modem via a DS275 RS232 transceiver because it requires no external parts for connection. The final portion of the puzzle is a PIR sensor that triggers a pin interrupt in the sleeping PIC, which then dials your number to alert you. It doesn’t look like anything happens other than your phone ringing, but that’s enough for a simple system. We’re just happy to see how easy it was to use that modem… time to go hunting for one in dreaded junk trunk. Don’t miss the clip after the break.

P.S. Though the 'Shop above only shows a Nokia USB modem, the agreement goes much deeper to cover the modem technologies used inside billions of Nokia handsets. So yeah, this is a fairly significant change of direction for Nokia.

Intel buys cellular chip maker Comsys
The acquisition, said to have taken place in late May, has not been confirmed by Intel, but has been widely reported in the Israeli press, as well as by Forward Concepts analyst Will Strauss who claims his comsysmobile.com email addresses now work with intel.com.
Comsys started out as a modem making firm for PCs developed for Conexant Systems, but later developed IPR for 2G and 2.5G cellphone modems. Strauss notes that the firm’s biggest licensee was Texas Instruments, which later purchased the Comsys cellphone operation. Comsys, says Strauss, then changed direction and entered the WiMAX business, Intel’s playing field, with its combo WiMAX/GSM modem chip.
Strauss says Comsys’ 80 employees will now join Intel’s major wireless R&D centers in Haifa and Petah Tikva.
Another source close to both firms confirmed to RCR Unplugged, “Comsys did, or was about to, go out of business, so Intel just hired some of their employees.”
The source goes on to say he doesn’t think Intel acquired any Comsys products, but that it was normal and expected that Intel “continue to hire wireless expertise inside Intel…not just for Wifi or WiMax, but many areas.”
Meanwhile Strauss notes that “although 3G capability was mentioned in the Israeli news reports of the acquisition, we are unaware of such IPR by Comsys.”
He added, “Comsys has closed shop, and I suspect that Intel wanted their brains and IPR, not their chips.
“Any cellphone chips that Intel may make, whether 3G or 4G will have to also “down-clutch” to 2G and Comsys has that IP,” Strauss told RCR Unplugged.
Strauss posits that Intel is “anxious” to return to the cellular business, realizing it is the only segment that can rival the PC space. “Intel, now under different management, is searching for ways to get back into the cellphone chip market that it once abandoned,” he claims.
The firm, says Strauss, had reasonable success with its XScale-based application processors, but had a tough time merging its multi-level flash memory on the same die with its baseband “Frio” DSP core. Intel sold both properties to Marvell, which has since revitalized and expanded on them.
Intel has been making massive efforts to scale its Atom chips enough in terms of size and power usage to make them suitable for cell phones. Several months back the tech giant announced its latest iteration of Atom, the Atom Z6xx based on the latest “Moorestown” silicon had cut idle power to 1/50th of its predecessors and that power consumption for audio processing had reached 1/20th of the previous version. Not a bad start.
This achievement, admitted Intel, was largely thanks to the company’s use of Freescale’s power management IC (PMIC) and Strauss claims an audio DSP in Intel’s accompanying Platform Controller Hub MP20DSP also went a long way to slashing most of the audio processing.
Still, rumors abounded that Intel was on the prowl for a cellular chip company, with Infineon Technologies AG topping most speculators’ lists. Such an acquisition would, in Strauss’ opinion, have put Intel head-to-head with Qualcomm, the world’s largest fabless chip house and #1 cellular chip vendor.
Unfortunately for Intel, however, Infineon was not up for sale, so the chip giant went looking elsewhere, and appears to have found at least some of what it was looking for.
As to why Intel hasn’t formally announced this ‘acquisition,’ Strauss told RCR “Intel doesn’t have to inform the public unless there’s a ‘material effect’ on its revenues or profits.”

Comcast prices for its "limited basic" cable TV service remain unchanged, and subscribers to its "Digital Economy" package will see a decrease between four cents and $10.04.
Increased business expenses and offering customers more services resulted in the price increases, Neary said. Comcast has about 1.1 million customers in Western Washington and Spokane.

Makes the BlackBerry as a modem for the iPad
And the most exciting thing for us is, that the BlackBerry device was very friendly with the iPad, so we can make the BlackBerry as a modem (tethering modem) to access the Internet using the iPad. By using the WiFi feature also owned a BlackBerry and iPad apparently this can be done, and this method becomes warm conversation at one of the leading BlackBerry forums.
To do this, we are required to download an application called iBluever cydia and install it on iPad device and install the application on the BlackBerry, called PDANet (maybe we are not unfamiliar with the last application, yaahh, it was never used on Palm devices, long before the BlackBerry comes … oops).
After all applications were installed on each device so we can activate the WiFi on the iPad. For the record, we must have access to Internet data packets using Internet access using a BlackBerry, because it makes data access a BlackBerry with a BlackBerry device as a modem does not enter into the unlimited data package (yes, I know most readers know this Twitteling ..
Good news for those iPod Touch users, that the tricks above can also be used for the iPod touch device and not just for the iPad. although the connection is not as fast as 3G connectivity but is more than enough to connect the iPad or iPod Touch with the virtual world while it is far from a WiFi connection.

The modem was unable to get a carrier signal on Mac
You may receive the message “The modem was unable to get a carrier signal” while using an external modem when you sign on to the AOL� software for Mac� for several reasons. After trying the first solution, check whether you can sign on to the AOL� software. If you still receive the message, continue using the suggested solutions until the problem is fixed.
You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.
Solutions
- Create a new network location
- Configure the AOL software to work with the new network location
- Trash the Data folder
- Backup, uninstall, and then reinstall the AOL software
Create a new network location
Creating a new location may help re-detect the modem.
To create a new network location
1. Click the Apple menu, click Location, and then click Network Preferences.
2. Click the Location drop-down menu to open it, and then click New Location.
3. Type AOL, and then click OK.
4. Click the Show drop-down menu to open it, and then select your connection.
Note: If you are connecting via dial-up, then you should select the modem. If you are connecting via an Airport Base Station, you should select Airport.
5. Click the PPP tab.Note: If you are using OS X 10.3.X, click the PPPoE tab.
6. Click PPP Options.Note: If you are using OS 10.3.X, click the Connect using PPPoE box to place a check mark in it, and then click PPPoE Options.
7. Click the Disconnect when user logs out box to place a check mark in it, and then click OK. Ensure that none of the other boxes are selected.
8. Click Apply Now.
Configure the AOL software to work with the new network location
If your location has been changed or removed, the AOL software will need to be configured to work with the new network location.
To configure AOL to work with the new location
1. On the AOL� sign on screen, click the Setup button.
2. Choose the Add a Location option by clicking it, and then click Next.
3. In the Name box, type the name of your Connection, for example, Home, and then click Next.
4. Select the appropriate connection type to add, and then click Next.
Note: If you select the Add numbers from the list of access phone numbers option, additional screens will appear where you will type in your area code and choose phone numbers.
5. Click OK.6. Once the location is configured, sign on to the AOL� service.
Trash the Data folder
The Data folder stores your connection information for the AOL software. Trashing it allows the AOL software to re-detect your connections and often resolves connection issues.
To trash the Data folder
1. Double-click the hard drive icon on the desktop.
2. Double-click the Users folder.
3. Double-click the Shared folder.
4. Double-click the America Online folder.
5. Drag any folder name starting with Data to the Trash. The folder name will be followed by a date.
6. Click the red dot on the upper left to close the window.
Backup, uninstall, and then reinstall the AOL software
If the issue persists, please follow the instructions below to back up your personal files, and then uninstall and reinstall the AOL software.
To back up personal files
1. Double-click the hard drive icon on the desktop.
Note: If the America Online folder is not displayed, go back to the hard drive and look for a previous System folder. Open the previous System folder, and then follow steps 2 to 7. Sometimes, more than one previous System folder may be found. In such cases, several System folders will need to be checked before finding the America Online folder.

My ethernet on my cable modem has stopped working?
alright, i have Charter Cable Internet and a Scientific Atlanta 2100 cable modem that charter supplied, anyways, I recently installed the usb driver on my other computer so i could use the internet, well after i did i was using the internet and such, and the Ethernet was fine hooked it up to my ps3 played cod5 online and after that i used my other computer on the usb cable some more, then today when i tried using the Ethernet on the cable modem, it would not work, on neither the ps3 or my laptop, but the usb works still on my other computer. I tried everything from IP renew to uninstalling the usb drivers on the computer and so on and this is what i get when i type in cmd, ipconfig/all

Use Your Android Phone as a Wireless Modem
You know you can surf the Net on your Android phone--but did you know that the same phone can also enable you to surf the Net from your PC?
We're talking about something called tethering. In a nutshell, tethering allows you to use your smartphone like a wireless modem: You connect it to your computer, then use its 3G connection to get online.
Carrier Considerations
Before you start thinking about tethering with your Android device, you should check with your carrier to learn about its policies and conditions. Some carriers offer their own fee-based tethering services for certain phones; others forbid the practice altogether or assess penalties if they discover you're d
As long as your carrier doesn't object, the only other consideration is data usage. While tethering, you'll be harnessing your phone's 3G connection to use the Internet from a computer, so you will be consuming a potentially sizable chunk of data. If your smartphone plan includes unlimited data, you should be fine; but if your plan allows only a certain amount of data per month, be sure to keep that restriction in mind.
First Steps to Tethering
Carrier-provided options aside, there are numerous ways to tether your phone to your laptop or desktop PC. Many of them require tinkering with advanced configurations on your Android device; we won't be getting into those here. The option we'll be explaining involves little more than installing a couple of programs and clicking on a couple of basic settings.
Let's begin with your mobile phone: Open up the Android Market and search for an app called PdaNet. Download and install it to your phone (it's currently available free of charge).
Once the app is installed, you'll need to download the companion program to your PC. Click over to June Fabrics (that's the name), and select the edition that's right for you. As of this writing, the program supports 32-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7; 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7; and versions 10.5 and 10.6 of Mac OS.
Before you move on to the next step, you need to adjust one setting on your Android phone. From the home screen, tap the Menu key and select Settings. From there, select Applications, and then Development. Now check the box that says USB debugging. When the confirmation dialog box appears, press OK.
This setting allows the PdaNet app to stream data directly from your phone to your PC. It is a setting frequently used by developers. In theory, however, as the confirmation box explains, it could be used maliciously. For your protection, you should go back into this menu and disable the USB debugging setting whenever you are not actively using the tethering function.
Starting Your Connection
Take a deep breath--you're almost done. Plug your Android phone into an open USB port on your PC. Run the PdaNet app on your phone and select the Enable USB Tether option. The app will confirm that you've downloaded and installed its PC-based cousin; click Already installed to continue.
After verifying the connection, the app will tell you that it's on and running as a background service on your phone. Now, go to your PC and look for the PdaNet icon in your system tray--it's a rectangular box that looks like a cell phone. Right-click the icon and select Connect from the pop-up menu that appears.At this point, everything should be all set (woo-hoo!). The PdaNet PC program should pop up a confirmation that you're connected, and a notification should appear on your desktop informing you that the PdaNet modem is up and running. Your computer is now online through your phone's data connection; you can open a Web page, check e-mail, and do practically anything else you could normally do while connected to the Net.
One final note: You may have noticed that the PdaNet Android app has a second option on its main screen: Enable Bluetooth DUN. If you're using a computer that has Bluetooth functionality, you can connect your phone to your PC wirelessly using this option instead of the Enable USB Tether option discussed above.

How to use an Android cell phone as a modem to get internet on your computer

Is it possible to use your Droid cell phone as a modem to get internet on your computer? I mean, you're already paying for that unlimited data feature. What's hindering you from using that data on your computer?
Well, the secret is about to be revealed. It is completely possible to use your Droid cell phone, or any Android phone for that matter, as a modem and connect it to your computer for internet connection. Even better, it can be free!
- Step 1
You will need to visit the market on your Droid to find the right app so you can use your cell phone as a modem for your computer to connect to the internet. Use the data service on your phone to connect a computer to the internet is called tethering.
So, go the market on your cell phone. Then use the search function and enter the following search: "pdanet". This search should elicit several results. One of the results should be the app called "pdaNET". It is a free app to download. Download and install this app. - Step 2
Following installation, your Droid cell phone will show the pdaNET app home screen. If it does not, then go to your pull up menu with all your applications and you click on the pdaNET app to open it up.
On the home screen of the pdaNET app you will have two options. Choose "Enable USB Tether". This enables your Droid cell phone to act as a modem for your computer. - Step 3The icon will appear in your tray.
To actually connect your computer to your Droid cell phone and use it as a modem, you will also need to install the pdaNET program on your PC or Mac. You can download the program for free at http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php.
Installation of the program will require that your computer be restarted. Once it restarts you will notice a pdaNET icon in the tray on your computer. - Step 4
Click the icon and choose "Connect". This will connect your PC to the internet via your cell phone. The icon will blink for a few seconds and the turn blue. You are now connected to the internet!
Your computer will only use your phone as a modem when there are no other internet connections available.
- Your internet speeds will depend on how good your service is, and what cell phone provider you are using.
- Most Android phones require the unlimited data plan with your cell phone carrier. Make sure your data is unlimited, or beware of how much you are using your phone as a modem or you might run up a huge bill with data overages.

Simple setup to prepare your own radio modem

Eric Seifert worked on the idea of using an “iPod” FM Transmitter and a standard radio receiver with a headphone jack to create a radio modem. The results were positive. Therefore, he put this information open for anyone who enjoys DIYs. Some examples encoding and decoding software are available on his site to help you.
First requirement, a Linux box with the ALSA and SDL libraries. He used a standard PC sound card, an iPod FM transmitter, and an FM radio to construct a radio modem at home. FM transmitter is linked to the sound card that outputs amplitude encoded data. The FM radio receiver takes care of the transmission and transfers it to soundcard’s line-in for further decoding.
You need not worry about the complexity of the procedure as the hardware set up is simpler than it appears. Don’t miss this opportunity to acquaint yourself with more circuits while having fun in your spare time.

Your Blackberry as a Modem
Most of the time when you are traveling, you have access to free wi-fi connections in your hotel room, and even in the local McDonald's. In the event that you find yourself stuck, needing to use your laptop with no wi-fi connection in site, all you need to do is use your Blackberry as a modem. You will need to make sure that your Blackberry is one of the models with the “tethered modem capability.” These phones are:

If you are using one of those Blackberry phones, follow these instructions to tether your phone to your laptop to use it as a modem.
Make sure you have a USB cable, and the BlackBerry Handheld Manager installed on your laptop. Blackberry Handheld Manager is part of the Desktop Manager software that is required in order to install applications to your device. If you do not have it, you can download it to your laptop from Blackberry. (If you do not have this before needing your phone as a modem, you will have to find a source of wi-fi before you can do it.) All you need to do is open the Desktop Software and the Handheld Manager will also run.
You'll need to make sure you have the necessary modem drivers on your phone before using it as a modem. Most of the models above come with the drivers already loaded on them. If not, you'll be able to get the necessary drivers from the Blackberry Desktop Manager software.
Once you have determined that you have everything you need in order to use your Blackberry as a modem, you'll need to go into your phone and configure the settings specific to your provider and ensure that your modem drivers are working correctly. Another how to for this will be coming along soon.
Setup a new connection in your laptop. The setup for this follows the setup process for any other Internet connection and will vary depending on which version of Windows you are using.
Now, disable IP Header Compression with the following steps:
- Start Menu->Network Connections->”BlackBerry Modem” (or whatever you chose to name the connection you set up in the previous step.
- Click Properties Button
- Click Networking Tab
- Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”
- Click Properties.
- Click Advanced.
- Disable “Use IP header compression” with the checkbox.
- Close out all the menus by clicking OK.
Connect the phone to the laptop with USB, open the Blackberry Desktop Management Software, click the Modem icon and find the available connections. You will be able to use the Internet on your laptop with the Blackberry serving as your modem.
