AMD chases Intel into gadget market with embedded chips
Intel has focused its Atom microprocessor on new kinds of devices from netbooks to tablet computers. Advanced Micro Devices is now launching a new version of its Fusion chips — which combine a processor and graphics in the same chip — to go after the same market.
This means we’ll likely see smarter and smarter internet-connected gadgets in the future. Shane Rau, an analyst at IDC, expects this market segment to grow at a double-digit rate in the next five years.
The new AMD Embedded G-Series platform uses the first Accelerated Processor Unit (APU, or a combo chip), which AMD has designed for “embedded systems,” or the gadgets that aren’t considered phones or PCs. Embedded systems typically serve one or two functions and are generally not programmable for other tasks.
AMD has offered chips in the embedded market for some time, such as its AMD Geode processor from 2003. But it has steadily increased the computing power of the chips it has offered in the space, culminating with an APU that is optimized for low-power consumption, smaller size, lower prices, and high performance.
AMD is targeting the new chips at a variety of vertical markets. Those include thin-client computers for enterprises, kiosks and cash register systems, digital signs, industrial controls, rugged military systems, medical imaging, game machines, single-board computers, storage, and telecommunications/networking gear. With the G-Series, computer makers can design a PC with a 3.5-inch circuit board (pictured).
The AMD Fusion family of APUs combines a microprocessor with a graphics system all on one chip. The G-Series platform has two “Bobcat” microprocessor cores, a variety of video processors and a controller hub for display output and input-output functions. AMD has lined up a number of developer tools for support. And its customers include Microsoft’s new Surface table computers, MediaVue, Quixant, Wyse, Fujitsu, Advansus, Compulab, Congatec, Haier, Kontron, Mitec, Sintrones, Starnet, WebDT, and Hewlett-Packard.
AMD says its embedded G-Series platform uses chips that are smaller than Intel’s equivalent Atom chips. That means they use less power and cost less.

Last week, Apple announced that the App Store was about to hit 10 billion downloads since its launch. Along with that announcement the company also will be offering $10,000 USD to the person who downloads the 10 billionth application.
To move on past that news Asymco, a market intelligence site, has done a bit of number crunching and calculated that on average, each device that can connect to the App Store has downloaded an average of 60 apps.
This number has been steadily rising since the launch of the App Store in July 2008 which shows some impressive adoption rate.
The numbers cover iOS based devices which includes the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Skype video calling finally to arrive iPhones and latest iPod Touch
Facetime will soon finally meet its match. Well, it looks like Skype may finally have caught up with everyone else. A recently published Skype info support page has started providing instructions on how to make video calls from your iOS device, even though regular Skype users amongst you will already know that that is not currently a supported feature on the Skype app.
Apparently, Skype video calling will be available on both WiFi and 3G connection, no doubt, the quality of your call will be dependent on how fast your connection is. More importantly, users would be able to video chat with other Skype users on Mac OS X, PC and of course other iOS devices – a potential which Skype has always had but not yet fully achieved.
To add to this, Skype will also be on a panel at this year’s CES called “Video Calling Gets Ready for Primetime” and will be making “series of video-related announcements.”

Surrounded by the likes of singer Justin Bieber, video chat site Chatroulette and rapper Nicki Minaj, the iPad was was among the top Google search engine queries for 2010 according to the annual Google Zeitgeist report. The report is an indicator about what Google users were searching for throughout the year, and coming in second place among the "Fastest Rising" terms of the year and first for "Fastest Rising in Consumer Electronics," the iPad was definitely on everyone's mind.
This shouldn't really come as much of a surprise, with the iPad taking home top honors in Time Magazine's Top 10 Gadgets list this year while also placing third on Yahoo's 10 Obsessions of 2010 list. With rumors popping up about the iPad 2 starting to ship by the end of February 2011, I imagine the iPad will maintain a healthy position in the Zeitgeist for next year, too.
Also interesting to note is the "Fastest Falling" list for the year, which includes Susan Boyle, Circuit City and MySpace layouts. I am going to go out on a limb here and assume that MySpace won't be making a big comeback in 2011, but I've been wrong before.

I met Tim Ferriss, author of the Four Hour Work Week, in a dirty thai boxing gym, around 2002. Neither one of us had written anything professionally. He tried to sell me brain pills. I didn't buy them! But I never forgot the exuberant, intelligent, athletic guy who came through our doors. Years later, when I saw him earning press for his runaway smash hit book, I laughed and wasn't surprised.
Most people know Tim as a guy who figured out advice for shorting out the work cycle. I skimmed the book once back in the day and it affected me and my writing team at Giz. I took it to heart that its not necessary for me or my guys to work 18 hour days; it's more important to me that everyone gets the stuff that will make a difference—in traffic and content—on the site and leaves the more granular work to the interns and new staff. Whatever can't get done by the end of the day is fine, as long as the important stuff was finished.
But that's not really the important thing to know about Tim. As I mentioned before, I know Tim from our days as athletes, and so I knew that his book about the body would be meaningful if he applied his usual methods of understanding how a system works and then exploiting it to have the most impact possible for any given amount of effort. In a way, Tim's the most ungeeky hacker I know.
Tim's roots as a body hacker started when he was a wrestler, starving himself to lose weight, and eventually figuring out tricks to shed pounds while doing minimal damage. When I met Tim, I was part of a boxing gym where we were obsessed with weight. Not for vanity, but for practicality: if you could weigh in lighter, you were often matched with shorter, weaker guys and you had an advantage.
Tim's book is not just about weight loss, although there are fascinating chapters—backed by his own first hand research and papers he quotes—about how to hack our bodies to more easily gain muscle, sleep better and improve sex. There are chapters on burning massive calories by exposure to cold water. There are chapters on how to import tools from foreign countries to repair "permanent" injuries. He also argues against principles we take as simple truths, like the fact that all calories are equal, and that dieting or getting stronger is as simple as exercising or eating less. It's just not that simple, he claims. In some cases, he says its simpler. We'll be running some excerpts from his book over the next few days and as Tim says, its worth being skeptical of his theories, but it's also worth giving some a shot.
Geeks can be accomplished beings in today's world. But there's stereotypically little overlap between the mental and physical prowess for geeks. I'm interested in doing the year program for pastry culinary certification. I was wondering if anyone knew what was the reputation of this school is and how its placement program is really like once you graduate? I hope that the time to open my own shop later after getting some experience, of course. I like the fact that you get your own team (which of course have to pay) but at least get one that includes everything clean as a chef chef hat, apron, all knives and gadgets I need. Also I have the last option to transfer all my credits to a degree if I want to move, so do not let go. Any ideas? If you are interested in baking, what would you do? Thanks!
Hello! I answered your other question (also on the kinds of cakes), I think what I said in another response should answer your question here. All I have to add is that all of them (the schools) that provide their own equipment and "things clean chef:) I said in the response of others to get a job in the field to learn ... I'm pretty sure that after reading this issue of yours who has no experience in the kitchen. REALLY .... get a job before entertaining the idea of going to school. It's a very tough profession (besides not wanting to go through schooling only to find they do not like working in a kitchen). They work crazy hours (the highest number of work hours in a week was 119 - the passage of time was incredible, but I was a walking zombie!) Almost never vacation away, and depending on which work could be treated as a slave. Of course, your social life will be a success too. But there are many aspects also positive. I loved the creative aspect of it. I did things I never knew I could create. But the most impressive things I've done have been in my work. No is the school (see answer other). I loved Sundays when my stuff was out in the lunch line, and I would walk and threw the people knew it was the pastry chef, to come to me and tell me how much he loved something, or was something that did the best I have ever tasted ... That made all the years of sacrifice worth penalty. Good luck

Nintendo’s 3DS Finally Has A Date
After ages and ages and what has seemed AGES AND AGES, we finally have a release date and pricing (kind of) for the Nintendo 3DS.
We had stated in a previous post (though unofficially) that we got a launch date of November in Japan and next Spring for everywhere else... Well we couldn't have been more wrong but to be honest we don't mind, seeing as how great the 3DS is supposed to be, especially with the line up of launch titles that will also be on offer (which we've included some of here).
As officially announced at the Tokyo press event, the 3DS will be arriving (in Japan) February 26th, 2011at around USD$300. In case you were wondering, the new handheld will be reaching European and North American shores sometime thereafter but unf0rtunately nothing concrete as of yet, only around March 2011.
What do know for certain also, is that the Nintendo 3DS will be coming in "Aqua Blue" and "Cosmo Black".
For obvious reasons, the fact that this handheld will bring gaming to 3D is a major selling point. But the reign of brand-spanking new hardware either rises or falls depending on the software available. Thankfully though, with the a huge number of fantastic looking launch titles on offer as well, this shouldn't really pose too much of a threat.
