Gadget today | The Apple iPad – mobile or computer?

gadget today
| More like a computer or a phone? And does it matter?

We suspect the 95 per cent of the tablet market who have chosen the Apple iPad as their slate of choice may not care an awful lot, but Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg inadvertently sparked an interesting debate about the iPad at a press conference yesterday.

While announcing the updated Facebook iOS and Android apps, Zuckerberg was asked about whether a dedicated iPad app was on the way – given that the event had been labelled as a “mobile event”. However, Zuckerberg dismissed the question shortly: “The iPad is not mobile. Next question.”

It sparked a bit of a debate, with Zuckerberg seemingly all but alone in his opinion, but he did go on to clarify: “I didn’t mean to be rude towards Apple. We all love Apple products here, and we want to work with them and all that. I just want to keep the event focused on what we’re doing today.

“The iPad is not a mobile platform in the same way a phone is.”

So what about you? Do you agree with Zuckerberg that the iPad is a different class of device to a phone, or does the fact that it shares the same iOS platform as the iPhone mean it should be treated as the same kind of gadget? Does it even matter? Let us know in the comments below…
