As one of the biggest and most prestigious gaming awards out there, the Golden Joystick Awards are quickly becoming arguably the most important in the country (only exceeded perhaps by the BAFTA Games Awards) and provide a very good indication of what the gaming public really like due to the fact that they are awarded completely on the votes unlike the judging system seen in other awards.

Back in June we brought you the Golden Joystick Award 2010 nominations for the 16 slightly modified categories and 200 days, over 4000 games and a massive 1.54 million votes later the results are in as to which are the biggest games of 2010; if you voted did your nominations come out on top? And if not it certainly makes interesting reading for any game fan out there!

But just before we have a look at the results a quick round of congratulations are in order to all of the people out there that contributed to these awards which now that they are in their 28th year and thus are becoming a bit of a benchmark for gaming success, and the number of votes cast is truly huge with a 26% rise from last year bringing the total to 1.54 million push the record even higher.

But onto what you are all really interested in: the results, and this was certainly a good year for the Call of Duty franchise who managed to pick up two awards, Plants v Zombies who won both “Download Game of the Year” and “Strategy Game of the Year” and Mass Effect 2 which arguably did the best with “RPG of the Year” as well as the coveted “Ultimate Game of the Year”.

• Music Game of the Year in association with Total Film – Guitar Hero 5
• Online Game of the Year sponsored by Game Gears – League of Legends
• Downloadable Game of the Year sponsored by Green Man Gaming – Plants vs. Zombies
• Habbo.com Portable Game of the Year – Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
• Soundtrack of the Year in association with Metal Hammer – Final Fantasy XIII
• MSN One to Watch – Call of Duty: Black Ops
• UK Developer of the Year in association with Edge – Jagex
• Ultimate Game of the Year in association with GamesMaster – Mass Effect 2

Needless to say the organisers were thrilled with the success of this year’s games which managed to not only highlight the games that excelled, but also represented a very wide range of games, and Simon Maxwell from Future (who are the organizers of the Golden Joystick Awards), said:

“It is a testament to the creativity and diversity of the industry that games are booming. Games that are playable anytime, anyplace, anywhere across social networks and communications devices are delighting new players. At the same time, winners like Mass Effect 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have taken storytelling and production values to the next level for committed gamers.”

Whilst the latter of the two has arguable storytelling morals his point is definitely valid: it has been a great year for games (my personal favourites have been Assassins Creed 2 and F1 2010) and the long list of games forecast for next year should make 2011 even better with Crysis 2, Diablo 3, Assassins Creed Brotherhood and Call of Duty: Black Ops (and hopefully F1 2011!) all sure to feature.
