Gadget today | Suitcases aren’t really the sort of thing that we cover on Zath particularly often and that’s mainly down to the fact that it is rare that one comes along that will really change the way we view and use technology, but as their name suggests Travelteq have a slightly different agenda when it comes to travel products and the meticulously designed ‘TRIP’ suitcase is a good example of that.
Completely ignoring the theory of ‘over-engineering’ the Travelteq ‘TRIP’ is the result of two years work that attempts to get the best looks, weight, size, portability, storage options, seating (yes, seating) and sound (and yes again, sound) that you can from a no-expense-spared suitcase; the perfect present for a city banker!
For lack of a better place we’ll start with the build of the suitcase which is, for want of a better phrase, very industrial. You do have a textile front and top (although I’ll come back to the latter) which sports a very business friendly black that works very well with the aluminium sides and back, and also the white wheels if you go for that option – the red is slightly less attractive.
But the interesting part of this is the amount of work that has gone into designing the aluminium sides and ‘seat’ (or top): they are in fact special aluminium sandwich panels with an ABS-PC honeycomb structure that is commonly used in aerospace ventures aimed to reduce weight whilst retaining its structural integrity and strength, something complimented by 5mm custom-milled aluminium rivets.
The reason for all of this is that this suitcase, at the pull of a small red loop, has legs that will automatically unfold and lock allowing you to sit comfortably on top of the case whilst using the handle as a backrest if you wish allowing you to relax, work or play while you wait for your meeting/train/hotel room.
This is by anyone’s measure a pretty neat innovation which will definitely come in handy if you are a regular commuter, and the intelligent design means that it can support weights up to 150kg on the soft rubber wheels supported by 4 skate bearings and strong glass-filled nylon wheel forks… over-engineering? Maybe a little!
A few other neat features include the fact that the front pouch (which is specifically segmented up for laptops, phones, newspapers and documents) can be detached – although I don’t know what you would replace it with – and all of the operating of the seat can be done one handed, in fact you only need to kick the legs in the right place to retract them. Oh and it can play music…
You can also opt to pay that little bit extra for the ‘Trip Sound’ which incorporates a sound-system that sits inside the case (although can be easily removed) and plays out of the holes on the left hand side allowing you to easily relax to your music in your hotel room, or annoy everybody on the train: your choice!
Sporting up to 12 hours playtime, power BASS options and a 3.5mm Aux In jack this should give you everything you need music wise if you are happy to pay that little bit extra on what is unfortunately a rather hefty price tag: the base model will set you back €595 (roughly £520) whilst the speaker version costs €650 (about £570) which is really a huge amount of money to pay for a suitcase, but it sure beats just carrying a standard gadget bag around with you.
This is a shame really because I would actually love to own one of these Travelteq suitcases as they are a great example of what you can do if you put your mind and technology to a relatively mundane product, so if anyone wants to buy me one as a Christmas present please do! Short of that, I can only hope that someone like Tesco decides to take up this idea and it loses the premium pricing!
