gadget today | Europe To Open Its First Video Game Museum – Is This Your Kind Of Culture?

super mario cheer 242x242 Europe To Open Its First Video Game Museum Is This Your Kind Of Culture?Europe is to get it’s first museum dedicated solely to the computer games industry in Rome which will be open in 2011. Now had you said to someone 20 years ago that computer games were going to be so big, there would be a museum just on its history, they’d probably have laughed in your face.

But nobody can deny what a massive industry it is today, we’ve got iconic long running gaming franchises such as Mario being 25 years old and gaming is now one of the most profitable mediums in the world.

The museum will be officially unveiled at the Italian Videogame Developer Conference this December with the museum given the name of ViGaMus. The museum will be situated near the Piazza Mazzini which is right in the middle of Rome.

Maybe venues such as this could be good places to hold events such as the gaming industry’s BAFTA’s or the Golden Joystick Awards? Or maybe one day the Gaming Industry’s version of the Oscars?

Could this be the start of a number of museums being opened worldwide which are dedicated to the computer games industry or will this be a one off? I’ve always liked going to media museums such as the National Film Museum in Bradford and the one down in London as I’m fascinated by film. So if the chance arises for me to go to a computer game museum and in this country then it’ll definitely be worth a visit. Or maybe it’s yet another excuse to get myself to Rome.

But what can we expect from this museum? Will it be all arty farty? It’s been described as “a centre for the evolution of art, culture and technology in the history of videogames” and will show people the industry’s past, present and future.

So what do you make of this news? Do you think the museum will be a pretentious museum that’s more about art than the actual history of the computer games industry? Or do you think it will be every games nerds Graceland? Either way we’re bound to find out more details come December. Whatever your views, leave your comments below.
